    A letter from Tommy

My name is Tommy Steckman and this is my story.

I was diagnosed a week before Easter 2002 with ALS, better known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Little did I know the changes that would take place in my life. A body that moves in a different direction than what I want to go. My mind so alert to the call of my LORD.

One thing that I have been blessed with, God has touched my lungs and I have been able to sing. Singing lifts me out of my chair, but more than that, my mind soars to a better life. The joy that engulfs me when I sing is a beautiful gift from my LORD. The lungs are usually one of the first things that get another life of its own. The doctors have told me the air in my lungs to be able to sing is very unusual. God does the unusual!

Now I am becoming weaker. Singing doesn’t come as easy. I have something bigger in my life as a single dad, and that is my 14-year-old son Michael. I am very concerned about him. He is so active and the light of my life. He is handsome, loving, smart, and is very creative and talented in his artwork. He has a winning smile with a mischievous gleam from his eyes.

I soon will travel a different road than Michael and I want to make sure his road is just a little easier. I have made a CD to help with this new road Michael will journey. I picked songs that have made a difference in my life. Each a meaning of their own.

I have volunteered for ALS. I feel this was something I could do to give back. I met some very loving people on Jerry Lewis Telethon. The support from people I didn’t even know was unbelievable and so appreciated.

I continue to enjoy the support my loving family has given me. My mother has lifted, loved, washed and cared for me with such loving tenderness. Pop’s and Mom thank you so much for all you have done for me. Oh how I appreciate my family and friends.

NorthCare Hospice is now here and they are also very loving and kind. God has surrounded me with loved ones that really care. Life is a beautiful gift. Use it and think of me as you play your CD and the good life I will be enjoying. Thank you for your kindness and your generosity.

I ask for your prayers for my family and I especially my son Michael. I thank you so much for your prayer support!

My name is Tommy Steckman and this is my story.
